IT’S ALMOST WHALE SEASON IN CABO!

Even though the weather really doesn’t change much season to season in Los Cabos, one sure sign of autumn is the migration of hundreds of whales from the frigid northern Pacific waters of Alaska to the warm calm waters off the coast of Los Cabos, Mexico. Every year Gray Whales and Humpback Whales make a 6,000 miles trek to Cabo in order to mate and give birth. The shallow protected coves and lagoons here are the perfect spot for the baby whales to develop their survival skills and build the strength needed for the long journey back to their feeding grounds.

Although whale watching season in Los Cabos technically runs from early December through late March, numerous whales arrive in November and hang out until April. Gray and Humpback Whales aren’t the only whales you may spot during this time – Blue, Sperm, Bryde’s, Sei, Fin, and sometimes even Orcas have been known to travel down here too. In fact, out of the 11 species of whales found worldwide, 8 venture to Cabo. Dolphins and Porpoises are very common sightings year round as well.

What makes Cabo San Lucas such a special place to encounter whales? Location! While the Pacific Ocean is the so-called highway that most whales take to travel between their home here in Mexico and their feeding grounds in Alaska – the Sea of Cortez is a true whale sanctuary. Cabo sits at the very end of the Baja Peninsula where these two bodies of water meet to create the ultimate place for our giant friends and also makes whale watching in Cabo San Lucas truly unique.

Humpbacks are the most expressive and acrobatic of all whale species and while whale watching here in Cabo, you will most likely be treated to more than just whales swimming by exposing their backs or seeing their tails flip up as they dive. Behaviors such as tail slapping, tail lunging, and flipper slapping are all amazing to witness. Also, seeing a whale breach or launch itself from the water and landing with an enormous splash is one of the most incredible sights to see up close!
